Political Cartoon 1

  • The Statue of Liberty is holding multiple torches that have names of countries in Africa on them.  The artist is suggesting that people from those countries can always seek a safe haven in the U.S.
  • The current turmoil occurring in some African countries has lead to some natives wanting out of harms way.  The U.S. at one time was were everyone fleeing hardships, god-awful dictators, or religious repressions came too.  The Statue of Liberty's symbolizes freedom and democracy as well as international friendship, so its only appropriate that The Statue of Liberty is calling out to these countries in need and offering a safe haven.
  • The Statue of Liberty is a monumental sculpture, portraying a woman escaping the chains of tyranny, which lie at her feet.”  This is the same situation the people of Libya and Egypt are protesting against currently.  The cartoonist is a Liberal, because it wants the U.S. to extend a hand and help these countries in need.
  • This cartoon relates to the current turmoil occurring mostly in Libya, but also the uproar in Egypt as well.  In class we stay updated on the situations taking place over seas.
  • The Statue of Liberty is holding many, many torches, all with names of different countries on them.  Yes the U.S. is trying to help Libya and Egypt, but the U.S. is also trying to help a lot of other nations at the same time.
  • The above cartoon was published in Daryl Cagle's Political Cartoonist Index on 2-23-11, found at http://www.cagle.com/politicalcartoons/.
